[04/10/2012 Update : this trick doesn't work completely anymore. But you can still link directly to a page by inserting "@[PAGEID:]” into your post. You can not edit the link name, as Facebook will take the page’s name as link. Thanks to our great reader, Eliot Lash, for the tip.”
Facebook has a great feature that allows you to tag a friend or a page in your posts, using, for example, the “@” character before the name.
You can shorten the name displayed but, unfortunately, you can’t edit it.
As of today, you need to say you couldn’t.
Like in the following example :
To edit your tag links, you only need to know one thing : the Facebook id of the page or person you want to tag.
It’s really easy. Just follow these steps :
1. Go to the page you wish to tag
2. Edit the beginning of the URL. Change “www” into “graph”
3. Copy/paste the id
Do the following :
If your friend is using a Facebook short name like :
Do the same as for pages. Change “www” into “graph” to get the id.
If your friend is not using a Facebook short name, it’s even easier.
Just copy the id from the URL.
Type the following text in your status box :
Replace “theID” with the ID of the page/person you want to tag and “Linkname” with the name you wish for your link.
For example, I’ve typed “Editing tag links is easy @@[0:[211704128859505:0:Want to know how to do it?]]” to get the result shown in the first screen capture of this article.

This is a great find – thank you! One question, this works great directly on Facebook, but when I try to do this through a 3rd party publishing service (like ours) it doesn’t work. This is what shows up on Facebook “@]”. Would you happen to know how to tag via a 3rd party publishing service?

Josh,
I'm pretty sure this hack doesn't work with 3d party apps. And I don't know any workaround, I'm sorry.
Thanks for your support

I tried it, and it posted but i didn’t see my friends name on the post, and when I went to her page, it wasn’t there either.

Copy/paste the exact example given in the article. You'll see it works. Maybe your friend's ID wasn't correct ?

The trick doesn’t seem to be working for me on finding the ID of friends who have user names in the address bar. I have tried typing “graph” in place of www, but nothing happens and no ID is displayed. Is there a trick? Thanks.

Sharon, hi,
Make sure your browser URL is written this way : https://graph.facebook.com/your_friend_username. It works perfectly for me.

This doesn’t seem to work for everyone. When I try it, Firebug shows me that Facebook’s response says:
“errorSummary”:”Attempt at Nested Mentions”
I get this no matter what combination of options I use. However, if I simply use @[id:name] then it works fine.
I wonder if this functionality depends on a version of their code that not everyone has yet. I also think it might be taken away soon, because it could be abused. Allowing arbitrary link text on public posts would let me link “douchebag” to Mark Zuckerberg, or something. It just seems like Facebook would discourage that.

Yes, maybe it doesn't work for everyone. Can't tell.
It may be removed by Facebook, indeed. Even if your example is pretty hilarious! ;-) Allowing people to tag what they want is a matter of free speech in my opinion.

This still works if you are willing to dig around in your browser’s inspector, or firebug. First, enter some text and a tag if you want an example. In Safari/Chrome, enable developer mode (if applicable) and right click on the text field and select “Inspect Element” from the context menu.
The source code for the textarea element should now be highlighted in the inspector. If you look under it, there should be a tag beginning with <input type=”hidden”>. If in the text field we entered the text “Test tag @Barack Obama” and tagged Barack Obama, we’ll see this reflected in the value attribute of the input tag, like so:
value=”Test tag @[6815841748:Barack Obama]”
You can double click this proprerty to edit it. You can now manually add tags to the post in the form @[theID:LinkName]. Use the method described in the original post to determine the Once you’re done, press post immediately so you don’t lose your changes.

I found an easier way to do it than described above, you don’t need to use the inspector:
Simply enter @[theID:] in the text of your post, I.E.:
Check out my new radio show, @[129566047142791:]
Make sure you leave the colon on at the end. What you put after it currently doesn’t seem to make a difference as Facebook will base the text of the link off of the name of the page.

Thanks for the tip Eliot, that's great! We've updated our article.
A shame we could not edit the link's text though.
Thanks again for sharing.

I tried it with “@[PAGEID:]” and just the name of the Facebook user came up but it wasn’t linked on my Page’s wall (it was simply text). Then I tried putting “@[PAGEID:0]” and the Facebook user’s name was hyperlinked! Did the trick! Thanks!

So the current trick for putting custom names in is “@@[0:[FACEBOOK_ID:1:CUSTOM_TEXT]]” but you can’t do it without tagging the person properly elsewhere in the post.
Any ideas on how to get around that?
